Special EVICT Talk with Masha Medvedeva – Automatically Identifying Eviction Cases and Outcomes Within Case Law of Dutch Courts of First Instance

March 8th, 2022

In her talk, EVICT’s own Masha Medvedeva talks about expanding datasets for legal research using machine learning. She discusses her work on collecting eviction-related cases among all cases published by the Dutch judiciary and identifying their outcomes, i.e. whether the tenant was indeed evicted or not. While the talk focusses specifically on eviction cases, proposed methodologies have a high potential to be applicable for collecting case law in other domains, e.g., bankruptcy, divorce, etc.

About the speaker

Masha Medvedeva is a computational linguist from Russia. She is pursuing her PhD at the Centre for Language and Cognition Groningen and Department of Legal Methods. Her project focuses on automatic prediction of court decisions. As part of her work, she is developing a machine learning system for classification and analysis of Dutch case law, as well as specifically eviction cases.

The EVICT Monthly Talk Series takes place every third Thursday of the month. For the next talk, please see our event page for further information.
