Legal Evictions that are Illegal: The interface between International Human Rights and Rental Tenancy Law
Leilani will discuss the difference between forced eviction and legal eviction under international human rights law and the norms that adhere. Focusing on the ways in which tenants are currently being evicted legally under domestic law, she will provide a counter-analysis using international human rights law to expose that these evictions are, in fact, illegal. She will consider what must be done to reconcile these competing legal truths.
About the speaker:
Ms. Leilani Farha (Canada) served as Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living, and on the right to non-discrimination in this context, from May 2014 until April 2020. She is the Global Director of The Shift, the global movement to secure the human right to housing. Her work is animated by the principle that housing is a social good, not a commodity.
About the monthly EVICT talks:
On the third Thursday of every month, we will have a speaker on a topic related to evictions, the right to housing, housing law, the (complex) relation between international law and national law, and/or data science. Each month, we will have a different international speaker (ranging from scholars to practitioners) who will offer fascinating insights into their area of expertise.
For now, the talks will be held online. Each of these talks will begin at 4:00 pm and end at 5:00 pm (Amsterdam/Berlin/Paris, UTC+01:00).
